I'm reading this really great book - makes me think. This is the first nonfiction book by Barbara Kingsolver and one I feel everyone should read. The overall theme of the book is "You are what you eat." She and her family decided to move permanently to their farm in southwest Virginia from AZ. They decided that they would eat only the foods they could grow or foods grown locally for one year. There is much about how the food we purchase in the mega supermarkets and fast food restaurants is grown - from genetically modified food, high fructose corn syrup, the cost to transport food, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. There is a lot of data in the book that made parts slower than others, but my favorite part by far was the discussion on the lost art of turkey sex! Now, don't think I'm a freak about food, I'm not - totally. I only want my kids to grow up without the help of outside hormones (Clare already has enough of them to make me crazy!) I want them to know what fresh veggies taste like (I've got the garden going out back with fresh squash already ripening!) I don't want to worry that the pesticides might just kill us with their cancer-causing ingredients. Of course, we live right next to an apple orchard and I watch or hear the trucks spraying the trees pretty much every day. I think this book has given me ideas on what I need to be doing to help my family be as healthy as possible. Last time I looked, Costco was selling it!
